Position Title: Geomatics Survey Tech I – SUE Field Tech I

Company: Withers Ravenel

Location: Cary, NC

Description/Qualifications/Requirements: The ideal candidate will have a general understanding of Sub-Surface Utility Engineering (SUE) and Electromagnetic (EM) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment. Experience with EM and GPR, would be preferred. Candidates should have a minimum of an Associate’s degree.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with project team members, client representatives, review agencies and others as appropriate to the project.
  • Perform Sub-Surface Utility Engineering services for both internal and external clients
  • Maintains the Overall quality (accuracy, thoroughness, meets regulatory requirements, public relations) of work, safety, and maintenance of equipment
  • Operating equipment, maintaining safe work environment, protecting and maintaining the equipment and vehicles
  • Accurately and efficiently collecting field data and locating features
  • Manage time effectively, organize, and work on multiple projects simultaneously in order to meet project deadlines and client needs

Qualifications:

  • Minimal experience with SUE utility designating equipment
  • Minimal experience with Vacuum Excavation

  • Good technical skills

Working Conditions: This job requires a person to be able to stand/walk for long periods of time. Be exposed to uneven terrain and all types of weather conditions being outside the majority of the work day. Good sense of direction.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent is required to stand for extended periods of time, and have the ability to lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis.

Position Title: Geomatics Survey Technician III

Description/Qualifications/Requirements: DEFINITION: Under direction, coordinates the activities of a field survey party; performs the most technically complex paraprofessional field surveying duties; and performs other duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Responsible for the effective performance, training, and safety of all members of a field survey party. Geomatics Survey Technician III reports to a Geomatics Service area leader either Residential/Commercial, Construction Services, Remote Sensing, S.U.E., or G.I.S. That leader is assigned responsible charge for field survey work.

Geomatics Survey Technician III possesses a general knowledge of land surveying principles and practices. Including a thorough knowledge of field surveying practices. Geomatics Survey Technician III need only to possess a working knowledge of the Subdivision Map Act and other federal and state laws and standards that regulate the land surveying profession.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  1. Acts as party chief for a field survey crew engaged in making plane and/or geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right-of- way, and control survey projects; participates in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers, resident engineers, and contractor representatives; assigns and monitors work, and provides input for evaluation of members of field survey crew; and instructs and trains survey crew in survey methods, use of equipment, and field safety procedures.
  2. Gathers field survey data through use of conventional and Global Positioning System (GPS) methods; sets up, adjusts, and operates surveying equipment, including electronic total station, data collector, and GPS equipment, in order to measure distances, elevations, and angles; prepares field notes and drawings; and performs field surveying for lots, roadway, bridges, and flood control projects, including installing surveying construction stakes, tying out existing intersection ties, and locating or establishing vertical and horizontal control, right of way, monuments, corners, boundaries, and property lines.
  3. Performs complex surveying calculations using engineering; analyzes raw data for mathematical closure and geometric accuracy; provides detailed survey notations of surveyed field work.
  4. Researches existing record information, including record maps, plans, deeds, easements, and right-of-way documents; and maintains field data records, survey project files, and indexing systems.
  5. May perform mapping compliance or other related office survey duties as a temporary assignment in order to satisfy the training/experience requirement for the Professional Land Surveyor’s License.

Special Requirements: Work is performed outdoors. Outdoor work may be conducted at landfills, construction sites, in swamps, and in traffic. To perform the essential functions of the job, incumbents may be required to perform moderately strenuous tasks, such as including lifting and carrying instruments weighing up to 75 pounds over rough terrain. Incumbents may also be required to clear vegetation, dig holes, and pound stakes with hand tools.

Knowledge of: principles and practices of land surveying, including boundary determination, legal descriptions, construction, topographic surveying, and GIS; field surveying practices and techniques, including radial staking; uses and capabilities of survey instruments, including electronic total station, data collector, theodolites, network control stations, and GPS measuring equipment; laws, rules, and regulations regarding subdivisions of land, boundary locations, mapping, and surveying practices, including the Professional Land Surveyor’s Act; principles of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as used in field survey analysis; technical report writing; and computer assisted surveying applications.

Ability to: assign, prioritize, schedule, and delegate work; explain technical concepts to others; provide constructive feedback; direct, train, and evaluate the performance of staff; enforce safety practices; work independently; read and interpret engineering plans; collect, calculate, and adjust mathematical computations such as distances, traverses, and elevations; analyze data; operate and maintain complex precision surveying instruments, engineering calculators, and personal computers; perform difficult algebraic, geometric, trigonometric, and precise engineering calculations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with Geomatics staff, engineers, developers, contractors, and the general public.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Responsible for operating/maintaining field equipment including electronic total stations, auto levels, and data collectors. Ensures that the batteries for all field equipment are recharged each day and that the geomatics vehicle to which they are assigned is adequately supplied and cleaned each day.

Position Title: Survey – CAD Technician

Description/Qualifications/Requirements: This person is responsible for the production of maps and drawings. The major objectives are the quality (accuracy, thoroughness, clarity) of work, meeting schedules, within budgets, and responsive service to client. This person will coordinate the production of maps and drawings to cover all details so that the quality is present and budgets and schedules are met. This person will be responsible for downloading/uploading field data, technical production of maps and drawings using various software platforms, communicating with project team.

CAD skills (subdivision mapping and platting experience); three to five years field experience in surveying a plus. Good technical skills; behavioral traits of process oriented, steady, helpful, analytical, problem solver, likes to work alone when required, methodical, consistent, detail oriented, precise, hates mistakes, likes structure. Knowledge of commonly used survey concepts, practices, and procedures.
